Light and air in a tropical city house

Courts, voids and orientation do more for comfort than any single material.

Fukaki House, Bandung — design visualisation, image 5

In a tropical city the most comfortable rooms are often the ones that let air pass and keep direct sun out.

Three moves we use often - Turn the main rooms away from low western sun - Open a court or void so warm air can rise and leave - Shade glass with deep eaves, screens or planting

Why it matters A house that breathes needs less cooling, ages better and feels calmer. At Fukaki House the living spaces wrap a pool and rock garden so light and breeze reach every room.
